Brouwerij Zeevonk is based in the coastal town of Koksidje, in the south-west corner of West Flanders very near to the French border. The Flemish name of the brewery emphasises the link to the coast and translates as ‘Sea Sparkle’.
Apparently it is the visible spectacle of a neon blow glow seen at night on beaches, and is caused by a marine organism called Noctiluca Scintillans. Which is pretty cool. Even cooler is the fact the brewery donates a percentage of their profits to the local Clean Beach association to help keep their local beach as clean and healthy as it possibly can.
Science and geography lesson over – back to our beer.
We have a traditional style Belgian blond ale, slightly darker in colour than your average beer, but still a lovely glowing liquid that beckons a taste.
It is malt-forward, slightly sweet with caramel malt but balanced up with an earthy hop bitterness and slight spicing. A really easy-drinking beer with a solid malt backbone and a good dose of Belgian character from the yeast that keeps things interesting all the way to the pleasantly spicy finish.
Much like their earlier tripel, I think this is a good example of the style that ticks all the boxes even if it won’t be my favourite blond. Maybe I need to be sitting opposite their beach to enjoy this beer to its full potential.
