by Brasserie Omer Vander Ghinste
Brouwerij Omer Vander Ghinste is a 5 generations old traditional Belgian brewery, and in the ‘Ypra’ range of beers we have their newest additions to the pportfolio. But it is based on a beer that was brewed decades before by the Vermeulen Brewery which was merged into Omer Vander Ghinste in 2021.
This hoppy blond ale mixes Belgian tradition with a nod to modern tastes with the higher level of punchy, tropical and citrus fruit aromas and flavour and a more assertive bitterness. Five different hops are used for this beer.
In the glass it is a glowing golden yellow with a foamy white head. Grapefruit citrus is the first thing that hit your nose, then some spice in the form of coriander and clove.
The grapefruit isn’t as pronounced in the flavour, though there is still a level of citrus fruit mixing with a grainy malt body and yellow fruit sweetness. This is balanced by some floral hop notes and a solid bitterness.
The beer finishes reasonably dry, with a lingering spicy bitterness that almost encourages another sip as soon as you’ve finished. Balanced and tasty, this beer is a great addition to what is otherwise a fairly classic Belgian beer portfolio for this mostly traditional brewery.
